Interior Designer Picks: These Wall Art Pieces Make Any Room Special

Guest article by Anna Bergner (interior design consultant)

As an interior designer, I work every day to create harmonious, cohesive spaces. I’m Anna, founder of Anna Bergner Interior Design, and I know from experience: Often, it is the right artwork that completes the wall design in a living room or gives a room character in the first place.

In this article, I present my personal favorites and explain which Interior styles, color schemes, and rooms they suit particularly well—and why I would use them there.

Why the right artwork can transform a room

Wall art is far more than mere decoration. It creates a focal point, picks up on colors and materials, and gives a room personality. Depending on the motif, it can convey calm, create dynamism, or deliberately emphasize the interior style.

As an interior designer, I therefore always view wall art as part of the overall concept. What matters is not only that you like it, but that it suits the furnishings, color scheme, and desired atmosphere.

Which wall art suits which interior style?

Different motifs create their own unique effect depending on the interior style. Here you will find a compact overview for inspiration.

Interior style

Modern

Abstract art, graphic motifs, minimalist compositions

Scandinavian

Nature motifs, bright landscapes, simple illustrations

Japandi

Ink drawings, pared-back landscapes, tranquil nature motifs

Geometric shapes, vintage illustrations, graphic art

Boho

Classic elegance

Timeless artworks, subtle still lifes, high-quality photographs

This overview is intended as inspiration. There are countless possibilities within any interior style, and motifs that do not seem typical of the style at first glance often work well too. What always matters is how the colors, materials, and desired atmosphere work together.

My favorite wall art for stylish living spaces

Below, I present images that have inspired me for years and that I can also easily envision as part of an interior design concept. Each motif has its own character and creates a very special effect depending on the interior style and surroundings.

A design classic for minimalist living spaces: Composition with Red, Yellow, Black, Gray and Blue

Composition with Red, Yellow, Black, Gray and Blue by Piet Mondrian is one of the best-known works of modern art. Its clear, geometric composition remains timeless to this day and makes the artwork a true design classic.

The motif blends particularly harmoniously into modern, minimalist, and Bauhaus-inspired interiors. Clean lines, streamlined furniture, and a restrained color palette in white, gray, black, or natural tones allow the artwork to stand out to its best advantage. Those who wish can subtly echo individual color accents in red, yellow, or blue throughout the room.

I would use this artwork primarily in the living room or home office. The motif is also ideal for the hallway, as it creates a clear design accent while still blending harmoniously into a pared-back interior.

For expressive interiors: Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer

Hardly any work radiates as much elegance and expressiveness as Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I by Gustav Klimt. The golden details, ornamental patterns, and intense presence make this painting a true eye-catcher.

That is precisely why I would not use it in every room. To me, this motif needs an equally expressive setting – such as an eclectic interior or rooms with intense wall colors and high-quality materials. The artwork looks especially striking against dark, cool wall tones, which create a deliberate contrast with the warm gold and highlight the work’s luminosity even more.

I find this artwork particularly ideal for living rooms and dining rooms, a stylish library, or even a moody guest bathroom or main bathroom. Wherever an atmosphere needs to be created, it unfolds its full effect and becomes the centerpiece.

For bold interior concepts: Tiger and Magpie

Tiger and Magpie by Misun Kim is a motif with a strong presence. Although the color palette is rather restrained, the artwork immediately draws everyone’s attention and gives a room personality.

This artwork is particularly well suited to eclectic or maximalist interiors. It looks especially striking when combined with an expressive wall color such as dusty pink, aubergine, or petrol blue, which further emphasizes the character of the motif.

Its extraordinary character comes into its own particularly in spaces where the interior design is not arbitrary but bold and individual. In an open-plan kitchen and living area or a representative reception space, the painting can deliberately draw attention to itself, giving the room an individual, almost gallery-like character.

For natural and harmonious living spaces: Blue Horse I

Blue Horse I by Franz Marc radiates calm, naturalness, and a special sense of lightness. The intense blue tones combined with the soft shapes give the work a timeless appeal.

I see this motif especially in modern, Scandinavian, or nature-inspired living spaces. Light wood, natural materials, and a calm color palette allow the painting to blend harmoniously into the space. I can also easily imagine it against soft blue, greige, or sage tones.

I think the work looks especially beautiful in an entryway, bedroom, or quiet living area. Its calm presence creates a relaxed atmosphere while also bringing natural elegance to the room.

For calm and timeless interiors: The Great Wave

The Great Wave by Katsushika Hokusai is one of the most famous works of art in the world and captivates with its powerful dynamism. Despite the animated scene, the motif appears remarkably calm and balanced.

The painting looks most harmonious in natural Japandi, Wabi-Sabi, or Scandinavian interiors. Natural stone, linen, and light wood, along with a restrained palette of blue, sand, and greige tones, complement the mood of the work without competing for attention.

Its timeless appeal makes this motif an ideal choice for living spaces that are calm, minimalist, and harmonious, yet can still accommodate a certain sense of dynamism. The work brings movement to the room without disrupting its relaxed atmosphere.

For expressive interior design concepts: Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird

Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird by Frida Kahlo is a work of art full of expression and symbolism. The intense colors and detailed composition make the motif a true eye-catcher with a strong personality.

For me, this painting works especially well in eclectic, maximalist, or exceptionally designed interiors. It looks particularly harmonious against dark wall colors or combined with rich greens and earth tones, which further emphasize the work’s luminosity.

This artwork particularly comes into its own in rooms that exude individuality and deliberately play with colors and contrasts. The motif is an exceptional choice, especially for a bold living-room wall design. It also makes a confident statement in a stylish kitchen or a moody guest powder room.

For calm and nature-inspired interior concepts: Crane Family

This motif radiates a special sense of calm and lightness. The delicate cranes, soft natural tones, and minimalist design create a harmonious atmosphere and give the picture a timeless elegance.

I see this artwork especially well suited to Japandi, Nordic, or nature-inspired interiors. Light woods, linen, stone, and a restrained palette of beige, greige, or sand tones perfectly reflect the mood of the motif and give it a particularly refined appearance.

Its calm and natural appeal makes this motif the ideal choice for rooms where serenity and harmony take center stage. I can imagine it looking particularly beautiful in a living room, bedroom, or a relaxed dining area. The result is a harmonious overall look that radiates tranquility and invites you to unwind.

For calm and atmospheric living spaces: Sunset at Junam Water Reservoir

Sunset at Junam Water Reservoir It draws its appeal from its special mood. The warm evening twilight, tranquil landscape, and impressive flock of birds give the motif depth and an almost meditative quality. It invites you to pause while bringing a gentle sense of movement to the room.

This motif harmonizes particularly well with modern, nature-inspired, or country-style interiors. Natural materials, warm wood tones, and a subtle color palette pick up on the calm atmosphere and perfectly complement the impact of the motif.

Its quiet visual language makes this motif the ideal choice for rooms intended to serve as a retreat and convey a relaxed atmosphere.

My conclusion: The right wall painting makes all the difference

A wall painting is far more than a decorative detail to me. It can give a room character, complement the interior style, and transform the entire atmosphere. That is why it is worth choosing a motif not only according to your personal taste, but also based on how it harmonizes with the colors, materials, and furnishings.
