More about the painting "Dog mother with puppies" by Yi Am
"Dog mother with puppies" is a well-known animal painting by the Korean painter Yi Am (이암, 1499–?) from the Joseon dynasty. Yi Am was a descendant of the royal family and was especially appreciated for his realistic animal depictions. According to historical records, he was even recommended as a possible painter for the royal portrait of King Jungjong – a sign of his high esteem.
In this painting, Yi Am depicts a dog mother and her puppies in a warm and peaceful scene. The dogs' fur is painted with soft, natural transitions, making the animals appear lively and friendly. The tree in the background, on the other hand, is depicted very simply so that the focus remains on the dogs. This combination of detailed main subject and simple background is typical of Yi Am's animal paintings.
The work is painted on paper and measures 163 cm in height and 55.5 cm in width. Overall, the picture conveys a calm and comforting mood and is considered a beautiful example of Korean animal painting from the Joseon period.
