What do we see in this work of art?
Printed on a framed poster, this “Hippo” mural by Korean artist Dear.Bon.Vivant features the face of a young hippopotamus. In this country, these animals can only be found in zoos, as they are only native to Africa and are not harmless creatures. The unusual appearance of these animals is now contrasted with the little child scheme that was so popular with the artist. Our gaze takes us directly to the center of the image through a simulated blur or a sharply depicted face. The artist focuses on a realistic look. We see a moist skin surface in which the ambient light is reflected. The skin itself is uneven and filled with subtle points of light, which further enhance the realistic impression. From the center of the picture, our eyes move in a circle to the outer points, such as the large mouth, the nostrils and eyes, and finally to the prominent wiggly ears. We even see a few small whiskers on the hippo's mouth, which show the artist's attention to detail.
Where can this mural hang?
This “Hippo” mural, printed on a framed poster, has a light, childlike touch and combines it with a detailed look. We recommend hanging this artwork in a classroom, or perhaps in a biology class, where these animals can be discussed.
