What do we see in this work of art?

The artwork “Cats” is an example of art from the mid to late 1800s in North America. The exact date of creation is unknown. This work of art is now in the Boston Public Library. This mural is by American artist Virginia Janus and shows a colorful, somewhat crazy-looking collection of black and white kittens, separated by their fur color. The black cats have large, colorful collars around their necks, which seem almost absurd since they are larger than the animals themselves. The cats' opinions on fashion taste are also visibly different. She ranges from completely calm to angry. The lower part of the work is more peaceful. The white cats are shown here, also wearing colored but much smaller bows around their necks. They are more peaceful and lie relaxed on the floor.
